Design Confessions

About

This project was created in conjunction with my Graphic Design course at the Rhode Island School of Design. What began as a simple book cover assignment evolved into a personal project featuring “Confessions of a Designer,” drawing inspiration from my experience in UX.

It shed light on the different tropes experienced in the UX profession. It highlights examples where designers may not be as empathetic with users, cut corners, or fall short in our everyday work.

Hope you find this relatable and brightens your day.

Process

Sketches

I drew 50 variations of phones for the book cover. I scanned and vectorized the illustrations so that they could be recolored and scaled.

Using InDesign, I designed the book cover with careful attention to bleeds, alignment, and overall precision.

Book Idea

I decided to take the book cover project to the next level by adding in content. Although this wasn’t part of the original assignment, it became a fun and valuable opportunity to learn the full process of creating and producing a real, tangible book.

Figma

I used Figma to create the content, since it’s the primary tool I use daily and where all my design assets were already organized. However, because Figma is a digital-first platform, it doesn't handle print production particularly well—especially when it comes to PDF spreads.

Back to Indesign

I transferred all of the content into InDesign to prepare the book for print. If I were to do it again, I’d make sure to preview the final designs in CMYK while still working in Figma. Although Figma doesn’t natively support CMYK, using a plugin to simulate print colors would have helped me catch potential color shifts earlier—before transitioning everything to InDesign.

Lulu Press

I partnered with Lulu Press to print my book. They made it extremely easy to upload my Indesign document and order the book! Overall happy with the result and learning process.
